Hard Metal Roofing FAQ's

When it comes to metal roof durability you will be informed by many different roofers that a particular type of roof is the most durable. However, this entirely depends on several factors that must be taken into consideration when offering advice. Some of these factors include location, budget, availability, and most importantly the purpose, and what you are looking to achieve. The truth is, all metal roofing options are extremely durable due to being made of metal.

At LDN, we utilise a range of hard metal roofing metals that include Copper, Zinc, Stainless Steel, Aluminium, and Green Coat Roofing. For a quick comparison of each metal, see the table below. Alternatively, get in touch with a member of the team to find out what is the most durable metal roof based on your current situation.

When it comes to high-wind areas there are a few factors that can make all the difference to protect your property. These include the roof shape, pitch, and material. Using specific roof shapes and pitches the wind is directed around the roof and prevents uplift. Combine that with having very little overhang; you will have an extremely durable roof.

In terms of materials, the most obvious choice is metal. What most people are not aware of is that metal tiles can be flat or shaped to look like clay barrel tiles which add additional protection to the property allowing the wind to follow the curves rather than lift them.

With advances in paint systems, finishes, and other technologies, metal roofs will withstand oxidation and rusting for most of their lifetime. However, there can be factors that affect whether or not your roof rusts. If you have plain, bare steel, for example, it will rust although this can be prevented with regular maintenance.

If rust is a concern, a metal to consider is Zinc due to its self-sufficient characteristics, such as the zinc carbonate layer which forms a protective layer over the metal over time.

Like every roofing material, they all have their place in roofing and their advantages and disadvantages. Metal roofs can fade in time or may be susceptible to staining. If not installed correctly, metal roofs can fail at the seams. It’s essential to have a metal roof installed by a qualified, experienced metal roofing contractor. Metal roofs are considerably more expensive than most other options.
